Floating Shelving - The Perfect Shelf

Floating Shelving

Overview:

A floating shelf is a kind of shelf which appears to float on the wall due to its brackets being hidden from view. Though they are made of light weight materials they can hold considerable weight.

Floating shelving is generally used to display things like photographs, crystal wares, and figurines. They are a contemporary way of displaying artifacts on the wall and add to the design of the room. They have clean and crisp lines and typically look very neat and tidy. This term is also generally used for any kind of shelving in which one cannot make out the support panels.

Designs:

They come in a huge variety of shapes and colors. It is not usual to find floating shelves to be made of solid wood, though they are generally made up of wood veneer which gives the impression of wood and costs a fraction of the real stuff.

Black, oak and white are the sought after colors in floating shelves. Oak can be used both for traditional and modern homes, whereas black is often used for bachelor pads. White is one color which can accompany any kind of interiors and yet match them.

Those who choose to enhance their shelves with sophisticated designs may select a type of shelf that has profiled edges or grooves on it. These types of shelves are usually chosen to display specific or important items such as pictures or trophies. These extra options can be realized by the more advanced floating shelf creator, but should probably not be attempted by the novice shelf builder, as they may compromise the stability of the shelf. Many novice builders are not accustomed to accounting for weight and design.

A point is to be taken care of. The amount of weight that this kind of shelf can take is not determined by the shelf but by the wall where it is fixed. These shelves can be fixed on to any wall. In case of solid brick wall have to look into cables and pipes and in case of plasterboard walls one has to look into wooden joists behind the plaster board for fastening.

Popular Options:

A 36" x 10'' x 2'' Chicago Wall Shelf Floating Shelving in White would cost  $36.00, whereas Georgia Bulldogs Football Shelf would cost $36. Another model of floating shelving, 40Delta Model 79010: Lockwood Bath Accessory - Glass Shelf - Aged Pewter is priced at $59.99.A 36"x 8''. Portland Solid Wood Floating Wall Shelf Honey Oak is priced at $36.00.

Installation and Size:

The size of floating shelves you will need will depend largely on the space you have available to install them, and also on how many things you need to store on them. Designs come small enough to hold only small trinkets or they can be constructed to support complete home entertainment systems.

Whatever their purpose, each floating shelf should be planned around its main function. For example, it would generally not be wise to plan and construct a shelf for the purpose of holding pictures and then decide to use it as a means to hold up a television or computer speaker.

A large part of successful installation is the implementation of appropriate brackets. They must be securely and tightly put into place so that they fit against the wall. Any stability issues that manifest during installation should be taken care of at the moment they occur, as the issue will only worsen once the shelf is in use.

Generally, floating shelves are considered to be an interesting addition to any home and are likely to be a conversation-starter amongst guests. By being different, they express a homeowner's personality. They may even showcase artistry if he created the shelf himself.
